Three years ago, Ford introduced a completely redesigned Mustang, the best-performing version of the car in history—especially in Shelby GT350 specification.
Now, a freshened version of the Mustang arrives for the 2018 model year, with sharper and sleeker styling, reworked mechanical components, and the latest in safety, infotainment, and convenience technologies.
Ford has released details about the standard and GT trim levels. Rumor has it that a similarly upgraded Shelby is going to join the updated lineup when the 2018 Mustang goes on sale in the fall of 2017.
Though instantly identifiable as a Mustang, the 2018 model boasts a redesigned front end, restyled rear end, and several new wheel and paint color choices.
Ford says the 2018 Mustang’s hood is 20 mm lower than before and features new vent designs. The headlights, grille, bumper, and front fenders are also new, designed to give the Mustang a more athletic and aggressive appearance, according to Ford.
Around back, the changes are less obvious, but the taillights and bumper are reshaped. A dual-exhaust system is standard, with 4 outlets on the GT, and a pedestal-style spoiler is available.
Ford says the 2018 Mustang will feature front and rear LED lighting, 12 different wheel designs, and three new colors, including Orange Fury.
Open the new Mustang’s long doors and you’ll find an interior that is nearly identical to the 2017 version of the car. Ford says it has added padded knee bolsters, a new hand-stitched wrap for the center console, and genuine aluminum accents to the cabin, along with an updated Mustang badge on the instrument panel. Restyled seating surfaces are available in new patterns and color choices, too.
Under the Hood
Ford drops the 3.7-liter V-6 engine, making the turbocharged, 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine standard in the 2018 Mustang. This EcoBoost engine is paired with an updated 6-speed manual gearbox, or it can be bolted to a new 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Ford says the EcoBoost engine makes more torque higher in the rev range for improved responsiveness.
The 2018 Mustang GT is equipped with a reworked, 5.0-liter V-8 engine. It gains direct and port fuel injection and is claimed to make more horsepower and torque than before, and also revs higher compated with the outgoing model. The GT’s 6-speed manual transmission adds a twin-disc clutch and dual-mass flywheel for improved drivability, Ford says.
Like the Mustang EcoBoost, the GT is offered with the new 10-speed, paddle-shifted automatic transmission. Ford says it is equipped with real-time adaptive shift scheduling to ensure that it is always in the right gear at the right time, and that when compared with the former 6-speed automatic it supplies better low-speed response and quicker shift times.
Suspension tuning is revised for all versions of the car, thanks to new shocks, greater lateral stiffness, and new stabilizer bars. The result, according to Ford, is improvement in terms of the ride and handling.
As an option, Ford offers its MagneRide adaptive damping suspension for the Mustang. Previously reserved for the Shelby GT350, it is included in the Performance option package.
All 2018 Mustangs have a dual-exhaust system, the GT gaining a quad-outlet appearance as well as an active valve exhaust system that gives the driver control over how loud or quiet the system is.
New driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are available for the 2018 Ford Mustang. They include a forward-collision warning system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, a lane-departure warning system with lane-keeping assist, and a drowsy driver monitoring system. They complement the blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and reversing camera systems carried over from the 2017 model.
Given that the Mustang is redesigned from the windshield forward, you’d think they would have modified the underlying vehicle architecture to improve the small overlap frontal-impact crash-test rating, as assessed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Ford says they did not.
A new, 12.3-in. digital instrumentation display is available for the 2018 Mustang, similar to what is used in the Ford GT supercar. Three display modes are available: Normal, Sport, and Track.
Additionally, Ford is offering a new MyMode memory system for the Mustang, allowing multiple drivers to set the car up to specific preferences that are recalled by the redesigned key fob.
Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system continues, complete with smartphone-projection technology in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For 2018 it gains Sync Connect technology with a FordPass smartphone app that provides remote access to specific vehicle features.
